Keith L. Gates was raised in Leake County, Mississippi, and he was born in Cleveland,

Mississippi to the late Willie and Mary Gates.


He graduated from Thomastown High School in 1990. Also, he attended and graduated from Alcorn State University in 1994 with a degree in Communications. In 1998, he was accepted into the Mississippi College School of Law where he graduated with his J.D. in 2000.


He began his legal career as a clerk for the Chief Judge of the Mississippi Court of Appeals in 2001. He has served as an Assistant District Attorney for Hinds County, an Assistant District Attorney for the 21st District, and he has acted as the Chief Prosecutor for the City of Jackson, Mississippi. Also, he has acted as an Assistant Attorney General in the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.


He is currently serving as an Assistant District Attorney for the 22nd District, including

Copiah, Claiborne, and Jefferson Counties. He is a member of the Mississippi

Prosecutors Association and the Magnolia Bar Association.
